As the new year is upon us, so are new design trends. Here are just a few predicted design trends of the new year from color and pattern to texture and scale.

Color

The many colors that are going to be found in the coming year center around the Pantone Color of the Year, Radiant Orchid. Rich jewel tones such as emerald green, sapphire, amethyst, and ruby are still a must have. Designers will be using colors that make you feel energized; something that brings a bold touch to the world of design.

Pattern

Color blocking is out and pattern is in! Dominating patterns, such as large florals and bold geometric prints, are front and center. Try mixing the two patterns together if you want to add a dramatic look to your home. You can always introduce new throw pillows, curtains, or area rugs with strong pattern to transition the look of your space.

Try layering large scale patterns in small doses, like these toss pillows

Texture

As designers, we want finishes that are yearned to be touched, not just admired. We want homes to feel just as wonderful as they look. Natural elements will be a primary focus for 2014 home décor – look for textured tiles, warm woods, and rich velvets.

Scale

This will be the year to play with scale, creating a mixture of miniscule to massive. We can create drama in a room with one over-sized piece, from a chandelier to an accessory to a pair of chairs, alongside smaller pieces. Homeowners want these not only for function but also as a conversation piece.
